A few years ago I sat in a gutter waiting for a cab into the city with my best friend’s boyfriend. We were having a tipsy d&m about how much we loved her and he said to me “she’s the best human being I’ve ever met”. I agreed and quickly wrote that down in my notes because that was the moment I knew he would marry her – the note is still in my phone and dated 8th March, 2014, 11.25pm. On the 18th November, 2017 he did just that.
Ellie has been my best friend for pretty much her whole life, which means Jim has fallen alongside her in the same place. When we were little and talking about weddings, El always said “I just want lots of food (and when we got older she added “and lots of alcohol”) in the backyard”so that’s exactly what happened. Ellie grew up in Brisbane, Jim grew up in Adelaide, they met in Melbourne, moved to Canberra, then to Sydney and now back to Adelaide… so they settled on Adelaide for their wedding (and as I’m 7 months late in posting this, they’re now back in Sydney).
The ceremony was held at Carrick Hill and then we all walked down an old road and through a hole in the fence to Jim’s family home for a backyard reception. I was also a bridesmaid so a big thanks to Greta Bennett for shooting alongside me and for the entire ceremony.
All their loved ones know what makes this wedding extra special – family is everything and our friends are the family you choose for yourself.
